Entertaining and cooking for the holidays is never an easy task. This becomes even harder if your appliances are outdated or not working properly or you’re dealing with a cramped or awkwardly designed kitchen. After years of living with small kitchens my wife and I have come up with a few tips to ease the pain of cooking and preparing for the holidays.
While not the cheapest option, upgrading your kitchen appliances, especially with those designed to save space, can create a great deal of extra room while cooking and preparing meals. If budget allows it consider investing in a wall mounted oven and a cabinet mounted microwave to free up additional counter space. If space allows a dishwasher can really help to keep your sink clear, particularly during larger gatherings or entertaining. Look for high efficiency and large capacity models when you conduct your search.
Check Your Plumbing
Most of us only have one sink in our kitchen. How great would it be to have another? If you have a kitchen island it might be a good idea to talk to a plumber about adding a bar or prep sink. For those without an island a pot filler faucet behind the stove is a great addition. These additions add convenience for prep and keeps you from having to carry pots of water across the kitchen. Cooking for a large group of people can take a toll on your garbage disposal. If your disposal hasn’t been clean or checked in a while or if it is sounding rough it might be time to check it out. If you are not comfortable with plumbing consider hiring a handyman to check it out. A properly running disposal will be able to handle the extra workload of holiday cooking and entertaining.
Maximize Your Storage
Adding storage is an excellent way to improve your kitchen’s functionality. By either adding extra cabinetry or installing brand new cabinets, creating extra space not only helps increase your storage options but can free up valuable counter space. Consider Lazy Susans, pull out drawers and even cabinet dividers to add on to your existing cabinets. If you plan on installing a new set of cabinets go with drawers rather than doors and extend cabinets all the way to the ceiling for even more storage space.
