Here’s a think-outside-the-box project for you: give that small, barely used coat closet a makeover. And no, not the kind of makeover that lets you better organize your outerwear—I’m talking a transformation that completely changes the closet’s function.
With a DIY spirit and a little elbow grease, spare closets can be repurposed into amazing spaces. This project is great for homeowners with limited space or those who have no current use for their closet. Keep reading to see my ideas for a DIY closet makeover. Maybe you’ll get inspired to complete your own!
Convert your laundry room into a laundry closet. Before you ask—yes, it is doable, but you might need to call in a professional to rework the plumbing. Having your washer and dryer neatly tucked away will free up space for more important things. The ladies over at 2 Bees in a Pod worked on this project and their laundry closet reveal is beautiful. The option to close the doors and hide everything makes clutter a nonissue. And you know what they say: out of sight, out of mind…until you run out of clean clothes, that is!
If you have a spare coat closet near your entryway, consider turning it into a mudroom (see The 36th Avenue’s example to the right). Install a bench, coat hooks and floating shelves for a basic but highly functional space. Similar to the previously mentioned laundry closet idea, you can leave the door attached to keep everything out of sight. If you go this route, update the hardware for a more put-together look.
When I first came across the trend of DIY closet makeovers, a scaled-down home office is one of the first ideas that came to mind. Take the doors off their hinges and you instantly have an open space that’s enough for a small desk and a laptop. For décor, hang floating shelves for decorations and add a lamp to brighten the workspace. It doesn’t hurt to have a filing cabinet to keep all your documents organized, either.
If you’re anything like me, you’re always looking for a place to stash your new books. Sometimes one bookshelf isn’t enough! When it comes to spare closets, remove the doors and install shelving to create a mini library. I can see this working well if you have a bedroom-turned-home office and don’t use the closet for clothing or storage. You can even install a bench inside the alcove for a comfy reading spot. A floor-to-ceiling bookshelf might not be feasible in your home yet, but turning a small closet into a library is a step in the right direction.
These are just a few suggestions for a DIY closet makeover, so don’t let that stop you from getting creative. Do you have young children? Repurpose the closet into a playroom. Love arts and crafts? Make your own little craft nook. Depending on the size and location of the closet, you can transform it into something functional so you aren’t wasting precious space.
