When we first moved into our home Sarah and I only had a small high top style table that we had moved over from our apartment. Now that we have a bit more space to work with we thought it might look better to have a more traditional dinner table that would also help fill the space out a bit more. Not to mention we had plans of using the old high top in our basement for a later project. The only problem is that (and I’m sure many of you can relate) - there were a TON of other projects that were a higher priority on our list. We didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a new table and since we had a few projects in the works in the garage we decided to refurbish an old table that we had found at a local consignment shop. It was quite dated looking with yellow oak and off white legs, but was still in good condition.
Moving to a new home my wife and I knew there would be a few projects we would need to tackle. The first being door knobs. While the builder had installed door handles for each door, the finish was not what we had in mind. Not to mention a few of the handles were backwards or on the door the wrong way entirely…rolls eyes. Whether replacing dated hardware or just looking for a change, installing or switching up door handles can really give your door and space a great updated feel.
Having new cabinetry installed is certainly an expensive undertaking most of the time. But sometimes all those old cabinets need is a change of hardware and a fresh coat of paint to bring them back to life. Many wood, laminate or even metal cabinets are great candidates for a coat of paint if prepped correctly.
So you’ve just installed, updated or painted your cabinets…hardware is typically the next step for most people and can really bring together a room. Even though this is the last stage of a redesign or installation it is often very important to the overall theme or décor of the room.
Honestly I think wall plates may be the most overlooked piece of home décor. However these plates can serve more than just covering your electrical switches and wires. Aside from simple plastic covers there is a whole gamut of colors, materials, styles and outlets to keep in mind; many of which can add a fantastic accent to your space. Hopefully this “guide” will give you some additional information in helping you choose the perfect wall plate for your next room update.
This has always been a problem of mine…my wife and I are making dinner and I go to grab a can or spice or any food for that matter only to realize it is buried behind 15 other things or worse we don’t have it at all. I finally thought it was time to clean out and reorganize our cabinets. Not only has this made life easier when searching for food, but it saves a huge amount of time come grocery shopping each week, instead of rummaging through a pile of cans and bags of half eaten potato chips we now have an excellent system that allows us to know what we have and how much of it we need. If you are in the same boat give these tips a try the next time you go to clean your kitchen, trust me it’s worth the time.
Kitchens are no longer a single use space in your home, but now serve to entertain guest, spend time with family, and of course… cook.
